As you would expect in an organization our size, we have a wide variety of tasks that need to be done and never have enough people. Would you like to come and help?
Do you have good office skills? Do you like to file? Can you make phone calls? Ever wondered how to get the plastic covers off books? These are just a sampling of the jobs that can be done in the office while sitting.
Perhaps you'd like to sort books. When books come into the building, they are initially sorted into nearly 70 categories by our Primary Sorters. Overwhelming? Yes, but the level of sorting is what makes our sale stand out from many others. You don’t have to worry if you don’t read across a broad spectrum; you can just pick out the books you know and sort them.
We don’t require a long-term commitment. In fact, some of our volunteers regularly work less than 10 hours a year. For more information about volunteering, contact the Book Sale Coordinators at info@booksale.org. They can tell you the best times to come.
We do not allow Book Dealers to volunteer.
Volunteering during the Year
We welcome anyone and everyone to help sort the thousands of book donations that come in every day. You'll begin as a primary (formerly rough) sorter, helping to categorize incoming books into about 70 subjects. We also have category (formerly fine) sorters who work in one of the specific subject areas refining the sorting of the books, deciding what portion of the books to display first, placing the books on the shelves, and working during the sales to tidy and restock their shelves.
Sorting Hours

The hours listed below are for primary and category sorters ONLY. These hours do NOT apply to book donations. Look here for the donation hours.
Primary sorting hours
The primary sorting schedule is Tuesdays, Thursdays, & Saturdays, 9:00am - noon. (New volunteers may come for training at this time.)
Additional sorting hours have been added to Tuesday's schedule: noon - 3:00pm and 5:00pm - 9:00pm.
Category sorting hours
Category sorters are welcome to work in their sections during primary sorting hours.
